Yasmine is a Black, 2nd-Generation Canadian of Caribbean heritage who grew up in Mississauga, ON. Her experience as a Black, dark skinned, and female minority shaped the ways in which she experienced and navigated Ontario’s education system. This inspired her to obtain a Master of Educational Leadership & Policy, specializing in Ethnic, Immigration, and Pluralism studies to explore the complexities of identity within the Education system.

For work, she is an award-winning high school Social Science teacher who uses her love of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion within anti-oppressive lenses to engage in critical discussions about global social issues with her students. Her background in combating issues of anti-Blackness and improving marginalized student experience will help support the ABR series through critical analysis of the dynamics faced by Black stakeholders in our system from past and present.

I joined SWO in 2021 as the inaugural Education Justice Director. Our team developed the framework for an interview series exploring the impact of Anti-Black Racism in Ontario schools. After a break for my studies, I have been enjoying working with likeminded, passionate young adults & I am optimistic for education’s future due to the work SWO does.
